BAPPS Masterclass

Working with Pornography in Supervision | Marie Maguire

Join us for an insightful hybrid event on Working with Pornography in Supervision at The Guild of Psychotherapists. This in-person gathering is a unique opportunity to discuss and explore the impact of pornography within the field of psychotherapy. Exploring the challenges it poses, the ethical considerations, and strategies for effective supervision, this masterclass is an opportunity to engage with fellow professionals and gain valuable insights.

As a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, supervisor and writer since the 1980s, Marie Maguire has seen rapid and dramatic changes in the way clients discuss their problems with pornography. The two themes that remain consistent over the years are the effects of pornography addiction and problems with sexuality, intimacy and identity originating in childhood exposure to adult pornography.

She will discuss her own experience of being supervised as well as her work as a supervisor, highlighting transference and countertransference issues in this area. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Marie Maguire has taught and lectured on gender and sexuality for over 40 years. Her many published books and articles include Men, Women Passion and Power: Gender Issues in Psychotherapy, Routledge 1995. This contains a chapter on Pornography and Bulimia which illustrates how much attitudes have changed towards both issues since the 1990s. She taught and supervised many students and experienced psychotherapists before, during and after her eighteen years on the Guild of Psychotherapists Training Committee. In 2009 she designed, set up and ran The Guild of Psychotherapists Pluralist Supervision Course for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists.
